The Porsche Boxster will be getting bigger in the 2012 model year – at least that’s what insiders have told UK publication AutoCar. If the reports are true, the 2012 Boxster will grow in size to make room for a smaller and cheaper entry-level Porsche based on the Volkswagen BlueSport Concept.

Volkswagen feels that the BlueSport Concept, which was unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, received such a positive reception from fans that it deserves to be built. However, to make a business case for the investment on a new platform for the BlueSport, Volkswagen Group needs Porsche, Audi and the VW brand to sell a total of 100,000 units annually.

According to my mechanic (Michael Crowley at European Autotechniks in Houston), running on regular should be no problem as long as you’re not planning to drive the car at 100%. Your engine computer’s antiknock system will automatically adjust valve timing for octane and altitude. The timing adjustment for lower octane de-tunes the engine, giving you less power, so if you want max power use premium.

Do be aware that many fuels sold at high-altitude stations are 1-3 octane points lower than the equivalent grades sold at seal level. For example, "regular" may be 89 octane (R+M)/2 in New Orleans but 86 or 87 octane (R+M)/2 in Denver. Check the pump before you pump.

Weighing just 1,275 kg or 2,811 lb, the Boxster Spyder is the lightest model throughout the entire range of Porsche cars. Clearly recognisable right from the start, this new mid-engined roadster represents the true, purist form of the Porsche sports car – light, powerful, consistently open, and very efficient.

This is precisely the formula already applied in creating Porsche’s most successful road-going sports and racing cars, ranging from the legendary 550 Spyder all the way to the RS Spyder so successful in motorsport today.

The Boxster Spyder now continues this clear-cut philosophy with full homologation for the road, thus reflecting a common wish expressed by Porsche customers. The new model is entering the market in February 2010 as the third version in the Boxster range, joining the Boxster and Boxster S.
