FOR THE FULL TEST: www.edmunds.com Only about 10 seconds elapse in our drive of the 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet before we realize that we’ve just begun a love/hate relationship with Porsche’s most brilliant piece of technology in the last 20 years — the Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, which, roughly translated, means “badass tranny.” Seriously, Porsche’s PDK (Porsche Double Clutch) transmission — a new addition to the 911 model range for 2009 — is as spectacular at changing gears as it is awkward to use. This transmission has won our hearts with ridiculously quick shifts and immediate throttle response, but also doused our spirits with its frustrating interface. Still, once you start winding corners together after adjusting to the shifting characteristics of the PDK, you’ll quickly realize that the 2009 Porsche Carrera S Cabriolet’s combination of newfound power and a best-of-both-worlds transmission enables it to satisfy the hard-core performance nerd and Newport Ned alike.

I establish four parts through which this feeling develops. Test #5 on love shows, from a very narrative point of view, the different stages of a concrete love story. As in the other works in the series, chance has been a very important factor in its construction, and I have always adapted the language used to the concept I was working in. So it is normal that this video displays a very cinematographic component because I am interested in going deeper not in a specific instant in the love story but in its time projection.

Porsche is raising the sportiness, efficiency and environmental compatibility of the classic rearengined 911 to an even higher level than before. The all-new power units in the 911 Carrera models with their 3.6-litre and the 911 Carrera S versions with their 3.8-litre power units come with direct fuel injection and are even available as an option with Porsche’s new double-clutch transmission (PDK).

The flat-six power units featuring direct fuel injection develop 345 bhp (254kW), that is 20 bhp more than before, in the 3.6-litre version. Output of the
3.8-litre power unit in the S-models is up by 30 to 385 bhp (283 kW), pushing the extra-powerful S-version beyond the magic speed barrier of 300 km/h or
186 mph.
